Share the Message Clearly: Keys to Creating Your Tract
Best Practices
Focus on how God worked in your life—how He drew you to Himself, led you to repentance, and gave you faith in Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Share what your new life in Christ is like.
Keep the testimony God-honoring, not focused on sin.
Highlight God’s work of redemption throughout your story.
Aim for a testimony that is honest and clearly centered on Jesus.
Do
- Keep your story around 2,500 characters or less.
- Start with a strong, attention-grabbing opener.
- Include a clear turning point in your spiritual journey.
- Structure your story into three parts:
a. What your life was like before Christ
b. How you came to faith
c. How your life has changed through Jesus - Be honest and realistic-don’t suggest that following Jesus removes all life’s challenges.
- Speak clearly about Jesus-He is the focus.
Don't
- Avoid negative comments about churches, groups, or individuals.
- Don’t name specific denominations or churches.
- Steer clear of sounding preachy or overly religious in tone.
- Don’t use vague terms like joyful, peaceful, or changed without explaining what they mean.
- Avoid using biblical words like saved, converted, or sin without making them clear for someone unfamiliar with Christian language.
Writing Style
- Write as though you were speaking to a friend rather than giving a formal speech.
- Be positive from start to finish.
- Be specific. Give enough details to arouse interest.
- Be accurate.
- Include interesting, but compelling experiences.
- Use one or two Bible verses, but only where they relate directly to your experience.
- Include an attention-grabbing first sentence.
- Write a closing that provides a finished and logical conclusion.
STEP 1 - CREATE YOUR OWN TRACT
- Ask a pastor or trusted Christian mentor to review your testimony to ensure it clearly shares the Gospel and connects with a wide audience.
- Have someone qualified proofread your tract for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Remember: there’s no wrong way to start. The most important thing is to begin!
Before the turning point: What was my life like before I was a believer
For 17 years, I sought answers to life’s two most important questions: “What is my purpose in life?” and “Where will I spend eternity?”
Growing up, my family regularly attended church. However, I became disillusioned by the inconsistencies I saw in the lives of others within the church. While I had an intellectual understanding of God, I struggled to know Him personally. I had a “12-inch gap” between my head and my heart—I had a little religion, but I lacked a relationship with God.
The philosopher Pascal once said, “There is a God-shaped emptiness in the heart of every man that can only be filled by God Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ.” I tried to fill that void with success in sports and academics, and living for the approval of others. I was captain of three teams, dated the homecoming queen, and graduated in the top 5% of my class. Outwardly, I appeared to have it all, but inwardly, I was very empty.
How the turning point took place: How I became a believer
Early in my senior year, my world was shaken when my close friend, Mark, committed suicide. His death forced me to confront the reality of my own mortality. I began to ask: What happens when I die?
Shortly after, a guest speaker at our church delivered a message titled “The Ultimate Rejection,” based on Matthew 7. He asked: “If you were to die today, do you know for certain that you would go to heaven?” He described the judgment day when many would hear the words, “Depart from Me; I never knew you.” It felt as if the Lord was speaking directly to me.
The speaker emphasized that God loves us, but our sins separate us from Him. No amount of good deeds can bridge that gap; our righteous acts are like “filthy rags” before a holy God. But the good news is that God demonstrated His love by sending Jesus Christ to die for our sins and rise again. We must repent and trust in Him alone. That day, I prayed to receive Jesus into my life, putting my complete trust in Him for salvation
After the turning point: How Jesus has changed my life
The Lord filled my emptiness and gave me a new sense of purpose. My life was radically transformed! I gained the certainty of eternal life. Problems didn’t vanish, but I now have the security of knowing I am deeply loved, forgiven, and accepted by God. My identity is now in Jesus Christ. Do you have a story like that?
After college, I served with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and later as a Missions Pastor. I’ve been blessed with a beautiful wife and five children who love the Lord, and 13 grandchildren! My ambition is simple: to know Him and make Him known.
